Urban Gardening

Urban Gardening seems to be a growing trend. Whether you call it 'City Gardening' or 'Small Space Gardening', or you just don' t want to convert half of your backyard into a garden, that's just what Urban Gardening is. With the new and improved tools and kits available, growing your own produce and free-range eggs is easier and more convenient than ever.

Other benefits to Urban Gardening is being able to start plants and seeds earlier in the year because of the portablility of the pots. If there are cooler temperatures in the forcast, just bring your containers indoors! Also, you don't have to worry about the weeds, tearing up your yard, tilling up the dirt, etc., that comes with doing a larger garden.

If you've got a backyard flock of chickens, raising them yourself enables you to know exactly what the birds are being fed and how they're being raised. There has been much research about the way our food is being produce, with fillers and chemicals that the consumer has no control over. Being able to grow your own, from fresh produce to free-range meat, not only will you be helping the environment, you'll also be helping yourself.

Several options for Urban Gardening tools and kits include Earth Box, Smart Pots, Ware Chick-N-Hutch (and other structures) and Square Foot Gardens. Each of these is unique in their own way, and have individual benefits. Earth Boxes are a great for tomatoes and vine crops as they have a "trellis" kit sold separately that will support the large tomato plants as well as enables vine crops like beans and peas to climb up the support.

Smart Pots are great for underground crops like potatoes and onions due to its unique ability to air prune a plants root structure. These pots can also be used for tomatoes, and can also house annuals and perennials to serve as decorative pots for your patio.

Square Foot Gardening is a gardening method that not only enables you to make the most of your space, and is an extremely accessible way of gardening since all of your products will be grown close together.

In addition to delicious, fresh eggs, free-range chickens have many other benefits as well.  They provide an organic way to control weeds and pests, and produce a nutrient dense fertilizer through their nitrogen rich manure.  Johnson's carries a wide variety of chicken coops to meet the needs of your backyard flock.

All of these methods of Urban Gardening are unique, and the experts at Johnson's can get you set up with what you will need to yield the most. Ask about our FoxFarm and other products, especially if you're interested in growing organically.
