Trees and Shrubs Fall is a great time to plant trees and shrubs ... for several very good reasons. One often overlooked advantage of fall planting is that you can actually see the trees and shrubs in their glorious fall colors before you plant. A visit to Johnson's nursery at this time of year will help you find the perfect autumn colors to suit your taste and fit your landscape. Secondly, in the fall, soil temperatures remain high long after the air temperature has dropped. Warm soil creates the perfect environment for rapid root development while lower air temperature reduces the demand for water and reduces the leaves' nutrient requirements. This combination gives roots everything needed for establishment, with two seasons of growth before stress of summer heat. Properly planted trees and shrubs will reward you with years of beauty in your landscape. To ensure successful fall planting, follow the simple steps on our Tree and Shrub Planting Guide. Every autumn, Mother Nature takes out her paintbrush and changes the various shades of green in our landscape into brilliant yellows, shocking oranges, and breathtaking shades of red, burgundy and purple.
