A bit of an update on our greenhouse construction project. The nice weather late last week enabled us to get most of the roof arches installed. In a few short days, the project went from just the pole anchors coming out of the ground, to what now resembles a greenhouse. Even though it may look like most of the work is done, it’s like any project in that the detail work is now needing to be done. From the side panels and roof vents, to getting climate controls installed, we’ll keep moving forward. This week's rain is great for our lawns and landscapes, but it’ll slow the progress down a bit on the greenhouse.
I briefly mentioned our pansy and viola crop in last week's newsletter. It’s amazing how much difference a week makes in not only the size of the plants, but also the color that the plants are showing in their blooms. From time to time, I'm asked what fertilizer we use in our greenhouses. We use a professional blend that is formulated in large bags. It’s very close to what ferti-lome offers in their water soluble line of fertilizers. Last week, I ran out of our professional fertilizer so with a few math calculations, I just substituted the All-Purpose and the plants didn’t miss a beat. Here are a couple of great options for you:
- ferti-lome Blooming and Rooting will get your garden growing! This concentrated plant food is perfect for pansies, tomatoes, roses, orchids, ornamentals, container plants, berries, and flowering shrubs. It encourages better blooming, greener foliage, and strong root development. Just mix with water and use it all growing season long as a soil application, rooting solution, or apply directly to foliage.
- ferti-lome All-Purpose Water Soluble Plant Food is perfect for growing vigorous blooms and deep green foliage in your blooming and foliage plants. This great product is ideal for use on geraniums, hanging baskets, pansies, patio plants, and other ornamentals where a general purpose, constant feeding program is needed. It works best when it's used as a soil drench combined with a foliar spray. What formerly was Geranium, Hanging Basket, & Pansy Plant Food is now All-Purpose Water Soluble Plant Food. It is my go-to for general use around my garden.
In production we have dwarf Luna hardy hibiscus, a seed propagated series. Customers have been requesting a hibiscus with the traditional large 7-8” diameter flowers but with a plant height of only 2-3’. The Luna Series fits into our gardens at just that size. Give it plenty of light to bloom, and it will attract bees and hummingbirds. With 5 color options and outstanding heat tolerance, it’s perfect for Kansas.
