I’ve had the thought that I would ride my bike on the Tour Divide every summer as long as I was able to do so. Being in my mid-60’s, I knew there would be one day that I wouldn’t be able to. With my good friends Hal Russel and Rick Ashton in their 70’s still riding from Banff AB, Canada to Antelope Wells, New Mexico along the Continental Divide, I didn’t know if I’d ever catch them - age wise.
However, with everything going on, I’m thinking this summer I may stay around home and enjoy time here. Recently, Angie and I pulled up last year's annual and perennial plant debris on a sunny afternoon. Not only was it therapeutic, it was time to get the area cleaned up. It’s like a good garage cleaning, it feels so good once it’s done, and it really doesn’t take that long.
We have many tools available to make the spring clean up pretty simple. But, I admit, there is something about weeding by hand if you can. Feeling the plant come out of the ground, the roots of the weeds breaking off. It may sound strange, but I know many of you know what I'm talking about. For larger weeds, I use my Eye Hoe to chop them away, and for large areas I spray Hi-Yield Super KillzAll, keeping it away from desirable plants. Being a non-selective herbicide, it will take out anything green and growing. Once the area is weed free, I broadcast Hi-Yield Weed & Grass Stopper to keep the area weed free for weeks.
After the area is planted with summer annuals, and as the weather allows, I put down Cottonseed Hulls as a ground cover mulch to retain moisture and help prevent weeds.
