It was the perfect storm for attracting mosquitoes while I was riding my bike past Mosquito Lake in Wyoming a few years ago. I had been riding most of the day and it was late at night by the time I was looking for a place to sleep. I finally found a flat spot by the side of the road, so I decided to camp for the night. As soon as I got off of the bike, the mosquitoes found me. Knowing that mosquitoes are attracted to people who are active, I knew I was a prime subject. This particular trip, I was sleeping in a bivy sack, not a tent. A bivy is like a body bag, a light and fast means to being undercover. That night, I couldn’t get my sleeping bag out and into the bivy fast enough!
Looking at the topo map of the lake, I found dozens of small lakes, which meant it was a perfect breeding environment for the adult mosquitoes to deposit eggs and complete their 14 day life cycle.
I am often asked why some people attract mosquitoes more than others. It’s not only about being active, but really it comes down to a person’s carbon dioxide levels, lactic acid and ammonia. Mosquitoes seem to be attracted to dark clothing as well. They’re not only a nuisance pest with their bites causing an irritation, but they’re a health hazard as well. A more serious consequence of some mosquito bites may be transmission of serious diseases and viruses such as malaria, dengue virus, Zika and West Nile.
While we don’t live by Mosquito Lake with its dozens of ponds around it, after the recent rainfall we’ve had, there is potential for breeding mosquitoes in the area. Because it takes -50 degrees to kill overwintering adults in the winter, our zone 6 (generally down to 0 degrees) doesn’t offer much for control. However, we do have safe and effective controls for mosquitoes in our stores.
Prevention is an option with BT, a natural and organic compound that will kill the developing larvae in standing water such as bird baths. BT is available in Bonide Mosquito Beater Water Soluble Pouches. They are the first step to controlling mosquitoes, which breed in standing water. Mosquito Beater targets and eliminates mosquito larvae within 24 hours. It’s perfect for use in water gardens, flower pots, rain barrels, roof gutters, bird baths, tree holes, unused swimming pools, and livestock watering troughs. It’s safe for fish and other beneficial aquatic organisms.
An option for repelling mosquitoes is Bonide Mosquito Beater Granules which repel mosquitoes for up to 3 weeks! Mosquito Beater is non-toxic and biodegradable. Its pleasant scent comes from citronella oil, garlic, geranium oil, cedar wood oil, and lemongrass oil.
For larger areas, use ferti-lome MosquitoGo granules to repel mosquitoes without harming beneficial insects like bees, butterflies, and ladybugs. It's also safe around kids and pets. MosquitoGo Granules create an irritant scent barrier using natural cedar oil.
