For as long as I can remember, we’ve sold Milorganite Fertilizer at the garden center. It has such a different aroma than other lawn and garden fertilizers that we stock. It's a deep earthy smell. Milorganite has been around for a while, in fact, the brand is one of the oldest on the market. It's not a mined product, but instead, it contains microbes that have digested organic matter from the wastewater of Milwaukee.
Milorganite is made using one of the nation’s oldest recycling efforts. Instead of plastic and glass, nutrients are recycled! The city's wastewater is captured and all solids are removed, then microbes are added and the activation starts.
Oxygen is bubbled through the water to create the ideal environment for the microbes to digest the nutrients in the water. The remaining microbial sediments are gathered and dried in kilns. The clean water is then returned to Lake Michigan.
Milorganite is described as a slow release product that releases nutrients as plants need them. Unlike other fertilizers, there’s no immediate, excessive release of nutrients after fertilizing, which causes a flush of growth. Most of Milorganite's nitrogen is slowly release and is delivered to plants for up to a couple of months.
This extended feeding provides more uniform growth, a deeper and better-established root system, and a healthier lawn and garden. Slow-release nutrients are also better for the environment because the nutrients are less likely to leach into waterways. With Milorganite, you don’t have to worry about burning your lawn when you use it! It contains virtually no salts, so it won’t burn plants, even in the hottest temperatures or driest conditions. You also don’t have to water it in. It’ll stay in the soil, ready to work, when moisture becomes available. Milorganite is composed of 85% organic matter, which nourishes the plant and feeds the soil microbes. This improves the soil’s ability to grow grass and other plants. Milorganite is ideal for sandy or clay soils, because it adds organic matter and doesn’t leach. This means the water-soluble nutrients aren’t washed away.
Labeled safe for all areas of the lawn, flower and vegetable gardens and landscape plants. Milorganite makes perfect sense for summer feeding.
